Washer Necklace

I loved this idea as soon as I saw it. Mostly because it reminded me of my dear, sweet, Daddy-o. No, no, my dad would never wear this, but being a carpenters daughter endeared me to the idea of taking Dad's tools and turning it into something pretty!

The Fixin's:

5' of 1/2" ribbon

2 boxes of 1/4" flat washers

What To Do:

Step 1
: Start with about 5 feet of ribbon laid out in front of you so one end is to your left, end 'a', and the other to your right, end 'b'.

Step 2:
Slide your first washer onto your ribbon, as shown below, leaving an 8" tail. You may notice your washers may be smoother on one side. Pay attention to which side you like best so you can string them all the same.

Step 3:
From end 'b' slide the second washer onto the ribbon, as shown below.

Step 4:
Take end 'b' and loop it back through the middle of your first washer so both ends 'a' and 'b' are to your left.

Step 5:
This is the tricky part: Take end 'b' once again and loop it back over the right side of your first washer and down through the middle of your second washer. End 'a' should now be still to your left (with it's tail coming out, over the left side of the first washer) and end 'b' should be to your right, with it's tail underneath the right side of your second washer.

This is what the side view looks like.

Step 6:
Repeat steps 3 - 5 until you've reached your desired length.

Once you've strung your last washer, finish up step 5 and your done! Go show your Dad!

Tips:

  • I singed the ends of my ribbon to keep them from fraying.
  • You can create different looks by using various sized washers, you can also paint them for extra "pretty", or use different textured and widths of ribbon.
  • If walking in a bad neighborhood, remove necklace and wrap around hand to be used like brass knuckles, or go Indiana Jones style and whip it!
  • These make awesome gifts too! Look how much Motor Boat Jenny loves hers!
