DIY Heat Packs

One of the best, most thoughtful gifts I've ever received was a heat pack like these, from my dear sweet Butterbean. I use it all the time! Just 3 minutes in the microwave and it's ready to go! They're perfect for snuggling up with during those "special lady times," relaxing tense shoulders or nursing achy muscles, and you can even stick them in the freezer to be used as cold packs.

The Fixin's:
  • Fabric, cut to desired size (Jo-Ann Fabrics sells precut 21" x 18" squares that work perfect)
  • 2 lb filler (this can be rice, beans, legumes or my personal favorite: flax seeds. Dried lavender can also be added for a soothing aromatic bonus.)
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machine

What to Do:
Step 1: Cut your fabric to desire shape and size, fold inside out and secure the sides together with pins.

Step 2: Sew together each side but one, and then turn your material right side out.

Step 3: Divide your material into thirds, either horizontally or vertically (depending on its shape and how you want it to fold), with pins mark the two dividers leaving 1½” space on either ends.
Step 4: Sew the dividers, removing the pins as you go, being sure to leave the 1½” open at both ends.

Step 5: Scoop your filler into the pack evenly, distributing it into the divided portions. Stop once your filler reaches the end of the divider’s stitching.

Step 6: Fold in ¼” from the remaining unstitched ends, pin and carefully sew together.

Step 7: All done! To heat, microwave no more than 3 minutes, freeze overnight to use as a cold pack.
